About Katiedyd
As a child, “katydid” was a nickname I was occasionally given, but the name inspires other meanings. This Katie grew up to be a pediatric occupational therapist, where I help children “do” things of their daily lives. At Katiedyd, I hope to share the things that my younger self “Katie” DID. For one thing, bringing nature to children. A “katydid” is an insect that easily disguises itself as a leaf. The mission of Katiedyd for Kids is to “disguise” the very best kind of hands on learning as play, integrating mind and body together. This is not the kind of play many of our kids are accustomed to these days, but rather the kind that helped to grow and develop their parents, grandparents and even more distant ancestors. With the advent of technology, homework and over-scheduling, many kids miss out on the basic elements of play that develop their sense of imagination, gross and fine motor skills, and even most basic sense of self in relation to the world and to each other. “Man, through the use of his hands, as they are energized by mind and will, can influence the state of his own health.” -- Mary Reilly, delivered in her 1961 Eleanor Clarke Slagle Lecture at the American Occupational Therapy Association conference
